GREENE COUNTY COUNCIL ON THE ARTS: ADVOCATING THE ARTS

For more than twenty years, the Greene County Council on the Arts has champi-oned the arts as a basic necessity enrich-ing lives in Greene County. The Council operates two galleries producing eighteen revolving exhibitions yearly with funding from memberships, corporations, and county and state sources. On a good day it is staffed by one full-time and four part-time employees. However, the small staff size is no indication of the largess quality of the exhibitions the Council produces. Audience can testify that the Council exhibitions are on par with any found in SoHo.

For much of the past two decades, Council executive director Kay Stamer has been the torch lighter and keeper. Through State funding cuts and cycles of donation, Stamer has been able to keep the arts a vital part of life here. The Council yearly offers grants to local agencies for programming that would otherwise could only be experienced in large populated areas. It also produces art classes for children during the summer.
