VILLAGE SUPPLIES FOR HOME NEEDS, THEN AND NOW |

Catskill
has long had a vital industry supplying high-quality building materials
to discerning buyers throughout the Hudson Valley. For years, it was home
to a major brickyard, as well as Excelsior Pottery, a top-shelf creator
of fine tableware and housing fixtures. It was also home to the world's
finest bluestone, used in sidewalks from Buenos Aires to Brooklyn, as well
as numerous hearths and mantels. We've always had our share of fine woodworkers,
along with all the great artists from Cole to Homer.
Yet still, the sudden birth of the village's Main Street as one of the region's top shopping venues for high-quality materials to fix up one's house, has taken many by surprise. Simultaneously, Catskill still offers two stores that have changed little over the years. Ray's Appliance, as always, offers not only the best refrigerators, washers and other necessities, but service contracts to keep them running in perpetuity. Dunn Builders, down by the Creek since the 1940s, is the store when it comes to hardware and a home away from home for the region's top contractors. Today, after nearly two centuries, local true value Day & Holt owned by Patrick Walsh, will become Swamp Angel Antiques. Catskill as a Mecca for home decorators. Next thing we know, we'll be hosting Martha Stewart. |
