A Self-Guided Walking Tour of Main Street in the
Historic Village of Catskill, NY

Corner of Church and Main – Bank of Greene County — This building was constructed in 1964 replacing Haines Tire and Appliance. The appliance store was housed in the former Catskill Hotel. Haines Tire was a fixture on Main Street for over 70 years, beginning as a blacksmith in 1885.
439 Main St. – Catskill Town Hall — From 1914 until the 1970s Catskill Town Hall housed the Deane and Deane Funeral Home and Furniture Store, advertising “Everything in the line of furniture, swings and hammocks”. South of
this building at Wilson Court parking lot once stood a building erected in 1899 as the home of the Wilson Hose Company. When the hose company went out of business the Village offices and Citizens Hose Company #5 occupied the space until a fire destroyed the building in 1935. Folklore suggests that a fire truck collapsed into the basement during the fire and today lies below the parking lot.
440 Main St. - La Conca D’Oro — The courtyard portion of this restaurant belonged to Temple Israel, behind which stood the Temple. When the house of worship burned in 1973, the cornerstone of the Temple was salvaged for the current building to mark its approximate location. The courtyard also housed a kosher meat market.
