A Self-Guided Walking Tour of Main Street in the
Historic Village of Catskill, NY

Main and Bridge St. – Greene County Court House — Construction of the Greene County Court House began with the laying of the cornerstone in 1908. The cost of $136,000. also included the sheriff’s residence and jail located behind the court house. On Friday, April 8th 1910 an open house was held for the public to tour the new facilities. The Court House replaced a block of buildings that included the 1892 Oyster Bar Restaurant, a livery stable and the Irving House. The Oyster Bar called itself the oldest established place in Catskill serving meals at all hours. Oysters were a house specialty and they served imported ales, wines, liquors and cigars.
331 Main St. - Stiefel and Winans — This circa 1869 building was originally four stories and the home of the Gaylord Opera House. A 1952 fire destroyed the fourth floor and most of the third and they were never rebuilt. It has served as Doty Golding’s Opera House Store, Sanford Overbaugh’s Restaurant, the Sedgewood Pharmacy, William Earl, Harness Maker, the offices of The Daily Mail and the Morris furniture Store. In 1880 the Opera House Hotel and Billiard Hall stood here. Proprietor Albert Saulpaugh boasted “The best brands of wines, liquors and imported and domestic cigars constantly on hand.”
335 – 345 Main St. – Little Wall Street — HSBC - There has been a continual banking presence on this site since 1819 when it was built as the Catskill Bank. When the National Banking Law was enacted in 1865, it was reorganized as the Catskill National Bank and continued to serve the area for over 150 years until it was taken over by Marine Midland Bank. The exterior of the structure assumed its present appearance in 1910 when the first floor was lowered nearly to street level to add height and dignity to the interior. First Niagra and Trusco Banks were built in 1907 and 1908 in the neo-classical style by architect Marcus Reynolds, the architect for the Delaware and Hudson building in Albany. Formerly the home of the Catskill Savings Bank and the Tanner’s Bank. Peek into the lobby of First Niagara and see Catskill’s famous Iron Dog, described in text for #22.
