A Self-Guided Walking Tour of Main Street in the
Historic Village of Catskill, NY

342 Main St. - The Catskill Recorder, established in 1792 as The Catskill Packet, was housed in this building in 1896. This newspaper was the official paper of Greene County; subscriptions were $2.00 per year. The Examiner was established before 1830 and called itself "Decidedly the best paper in Greene County today." In 1938 The Examiner merged with The Catskill Recorder to become what is now known as The Catskill Daily Mail.
344 Main St. Catskill Community Center — A 1916 donation of $30,000. by Frederick Nelson Dubois made possible the first YMCA in Catskill, known as “The Arcade”. A 1957 fire destroyed the third story of this building. It was rebuilt as two stories for the Catskill Boys Club. At the time of the fire, the Catskill Fire Department did not own a ladder truck and was unable to save the third story.
349 Main St. - Day and Holt — This hardware store has been on Main Street since 1810. Thomas and Apollos Cooke began operating the business a few doors up the street near the corner of Factory Street (formerly Liberty Alley). In addition to hardware, the Cooke brothers sold
groceries, dry goods and pharmacy items. In 1817 they moved the store to its present location. By 1836 the store had a new owner, John Lusk, and a new name, the Sign of the Key, an immense wooden key hung over the door. That key now hangs over the counter in the middle of the store. Jeremiah Day and Samuel E. Holt purchased the business in 1883 and changed the name to Day and Holt. The family of the present owner, Pat Walsh, bought the store in 19ll but retained the Day and Holt name.
