A Self-Guided Walking Tour of Main Street in the
Historic Village of Catskill, NY

351-353 Main St. - Firehouse Tavern — Have a cool drink in this landmark pub. Note the circa 1870 photo and ask to see the depression era menu. But don’t expect to order a porterhouse steak with onions for $1.30. The New York Restaurant was the place to dine from the 1930s through the ’50s. Remnants of the lobster tank can still be seen in the front window. In the ’60s the restaurant was known as the Village Pub.
355 Main St. – Mayflower Sweet Shop — This 1890 brick building was erected to house the Shaler & Fox Grocery Store. Their motto was “Our Aim is to Keep the Best”. It remained in the Fox family for a number of years as a confectioner store. Finally in 1933 the Pittas family purchased the business and it became the Mayflower Sweet Shop. Most residents remember “Manny”, famous for his egg creams, tuna sandwiches and tall tales.

354 Main St. – Functional Sculpture Tile Shop Circa 1800. — Little is known about early occupants of this three story building. From 1906 through 1917 it was the Exchange House, an inn run by Thomas Conerty. The third floor still displays the room numbers on the doors. It later became Hasselmann’s, a bar most famous for it’s limburger sandwiches! Prior to becoming the home of Functional Sculpture it was The White Horse Saloon and then Inge’s Fashions.
