A Self-Guided Walking Tour of Main Street in the
Historic Village of Catskill, NY

358 – 362 Main St. — This impressive structure was built circa 1800. The story goes that the front lawn of this house went down to the creek. In 1867 it was purchased by Dr. Phillips as a residence and office. In 1896 a dentist, Dr. George Englert, took up residence and opened his dental office. It remained in the Englert family as a dentist office until well into the late 1900s. The two small street level shops have housed a number of businesses including Johnstone’s Photography and Marafioti’s Barber Shop where many 1900s heads were clipped and photographed.
361 Main St. — This landmark furniture store, built in 1860, was acquired in the late 1940s by the Oren’s, but served the community as a hardware and blacksmith shop earlier in the century. Behind the store and adjoined to it by a walkway is a former mill built by a Civil War uniform manufacturing company.
370 Main St. at the corner of William St. — Built in 1867 this building was first known as Meech’s Hall. It was built in the Italianate style and with two sides to the streets, it was quite a prominent building. Once the Express
Office it later became Sage’s Repository, headquarters for a coal business and harness shop. Sage was later joined by Meech and Cowles and operated a grocery store here. C. E. Bloodgood, Attorney and Counselor-at-Law occupied an office in 1892. Known as “a powerful influence in his party and the Community”, he was later elected New York State Senator (D). In the 1920s it was home to the original Oren’s furniture store.
